Great tips for you new seed feeder!

Start by filling your new feeder a 1/4 full. If after 4 weeks no birds have arrived sprinkle that seed on the ground and refill to 1/4 full. This habit keeps the seed fresh while waiting on the birds to arrive. Once they arrive or if they come right away you can then fill them as you wish.

If you have a feeder in your yard now and it will use the same seed as your new feeder try this: let it run empty and make your new feeder the only one with seed. This pushes the birds to try the new feeder and is often necessary to establish new feeding areas. Once the birds arrive at the new feeder refill other feeders on your regular schedule.

You should fill you feeders with sunflower seeds if they hang. Safflower, sunflower chips, or peanuts are also great and each hold a special attraction to certain birds. To prevent waste, feed low grade mixed seeds in ground feeders to attract winter visitors that specialize in eating those seeds.

If you have a suet feeder you need to be sure to use only mealy style summer suet that won’t melt when it’s hot. Winter suet looks greasy, summer suet has a corn meal look. The Birdhouse stocks suet that is right for the season so you save money and keep the birds safe.

Feeders should be thoroughly cleaned every few months with a mild bleach solution. Rinse well and let dry in the sun to prevent mold and mildew buildup.
