Attracting hummingbirds with nectar feeders.
Nectar feeders must be changed every 3 days to prevent fermentation. Fermented nectar can kill hummingbirds so cleaning is vital. Smaller feeders can attract just as many birds with less waste.
You can make your own nectar with a 4 to 1 ratio of water to sugar, dissolve completely and store in the refrigerator. Small brushes are handy for cleaning the feeder ports.
Changing the ratio or using alternate food sources are not necessary. Never use honey, jell-o, kool-aid, food flavorings, or colorings. These can harm hummingbirds; you only need sugar and water.
Hanging feeders out of the sun will help preserve nectar. Hummingbirds are small and fast so place your feeder close to where you spend the most time. Outside the kitchen window, off the front porch, or in a favorite garden spot so you notice them. Try a window hanger for extra close up viewing. .
If you have more than one feeder place them out of sight of each to reduce aggressive behavior and get more birds. If you have trouble attracting them, try hanging the feeder in a open area of the yard to make it easy to see. You can tie some bright colored ribbons to the perches to catch the birds attention. Once they come, move the feeder to the best viewing location. Bright colored decorative hooks can also attract attention of the birds.
