Learn where your birds live.
Putting your house in the right spot is important to attracting certain birds. Here is the information you need to attract some backyard favorites.
Bluebird: Place on a pole 4-8 feet high in an open yard or field space. Having small trees, fences, and other short perches close by adds to the attractiveness.
Tree swallow: Place on a tree or post 4-10 feet high in open yard, or woods near water. If competition exists with bluebirds place one each of the houses back to back to help both nest.
Chickadee/Titmouse: Place on a tree or pole 5-10 feet high in woodland clearings or edges.
Wren: Place on a tree, pole or building 4-10 feet high in yards or open woods with dense shrubs or brush piles.
Wood Duck: Place on a pole 4 foot high over water and 10 feet high over land at swamps, lakes or woods near water. Face front of house toward water.
Woodpecker: Place houses 8-20 feet high in or at wood edges. Wood chips placed in house are a plus.
Kestrel /Screech Owl: Place owl houses 5-20 feet high and kestrel 15-30 feet high at the edge of the woods, kestrel house can be place in open fields. For other species call or visit us for more information.
Bird houses should be cleaned in late fall or winter with a mild bleach solution. Rinse well and dry in the sun.
Check houses during the season to assist in extreme cases such as removing deceased young or cleaning out a soiled wet nest not in use. Inactive houses should be moved to new locations to get birds interested. Leave houses out during winter to give cavity nesters a place to roost on cold nights. Nesting material like wool or hair can be offered for nest building in the spring.
