NEAT STREET PROGRAM

A collaborative effort by The Birdhouse and the City of Madison, this program is the start of an anti-litter campaign for downtown Madison.

It is the goal of the program to have one supporter for each half block of downtown. The supporter must commit to three areas of litter prevention in exchange for a sign on the trash can showing their support.

We are the supporters for our half block . The signs are transposed. They are black signs with white lettering to mesh with the trash cans and light poles downtown.  Please support this program by stopping by the stores that have signs letting them know how they are doing.

This program could be applied to parking lots, alleys and other areas that need attention.

If you are interested in supporting this program in any way please contact us at Questions or call us at 812-273-1193.

The prevention program includes checking for litter twice a day on the sidewalk.

Removing postings from street poles and requesting placement inside shops for better exposure to customers.

Emptying butt cans (Just coffee cans painted black) that have been placed their for cigarette disposal.

The Birdhouse is committed to the program through sign design, soliciting supporters and providing butt cans.

The City of Madison committed to the program by placing larger trash cans  on the street and making and placing the signs.

If you’re interested in being a Neat Street Supporter or helping with this program stop by the store, call us at 812-273-1193 for more information or email us.

KEEPING CATS

INDOORS PROGRAM

After recently having a chance encounter with a cat on the loose, (Poppy aka JayC), The Birdhouse is even more committed to providing information about proper cat care.

Our new friend Poppy had a happy ending to his story but many pets aren't so lucky.

Keeping cats indoors is a widely supported program helping to educate people on the necessity of cat care. It provides education about much safer an indoor cat is and helps protect wild birds and animals. Visit this web site to learn more about the program: www.abcbirds.org/cats

Because of the Keeping Cats Indoors Program and the extreme need for adoptions we have taken cats from local veterinarians and the humane society and placed them in indoor homes.

We have adopted two cats for the store. Mink and Chickadee. Stop by to meet them both during store hours.

This is Smokey. He is a large shorthaired male. He is shy but adorable and sometimes independent. He is fine spending time alone but loves to be in your company. He is neutered and ready for a home. We have been trying to place him since the Spring of 2006 but the right person just hasn't met him.  Please stop by the store to visit him if your are looking for a quiet cat.

Any cats we adopt must have families that are committed to keeping them indoors and  getting them spade or neutered if not already done when adopted. Since the spring of 2006 we have adopted out over 40 cats to indoor homes.

We take in and adopt as many animals as possible. We do not have facilities to take multiple animals at once and must limit adoptions to what we can commit to.

Due to the obvious need to reduce unwanted cats we will be supporting the creation of a mandatory spade and neuter program for the state.

Stop by the store to sign our petition and send a message about ending stray pet population growth.

It’s no secret, we love Smokey Bear. From the Smokey products we sell to making appearances as Smokey, to having him visit the store. Here are just a few pictures of Smokey Bear with the people that love & support him in Historic downtown Madison.
